Hypnagogicstate
Sleepconsistsofdifferentstages.Whenfallingasleep,yougothroughatransitionstagefromwakingtosleeping.Thisiscalledthehypnagogicstage.InthatonetheHI,HH,andHSoccurs.Iwillnowexplaininlittlemoredetailwhattoexpectfromit.Notethatyoumayormaynotexperienceallofthosephenomena.
HypnagogicImagery,Sounds,andHallucinations
Imagery
Theimageryisthevisualsthatyouseeonyoureyelids.Donotmistakethemforyourimagination/visualization.Itcanbearangeofthings,lines,dots,shadows,theyvaryincolorandshape.Ifyougettooinvolvedwiththemyouwillfallasleepprettyfast.Thetrickistopassivelyobservethem.Inthebeginningyoucanevencommentonthemtoyourself,thatwayyourconsciousnesswon'tfallasleepeasily.
Thereisadistinctdifferencebetweenimageryandimagination.
Whenpeoplesaydon'tgettooinvolvedinHI,theymeanthatyoushouldtrynottoassociateshapesandvisualizeaclearpicturewhenyouseeHI.NotethatyoucandothisandWILDwithvisualizationbutittendstoconsumeallofyourconsciousnessandyoufallasleeptoofast.ItismucheasiertostayawarewithHIthanitiswithvisualization.ForsomepeopleHIisthewaytoaWILDandforothersvisualizationworksbetter.So,howtotellthedifference?HIyouseewithyourrealeyes,andvisualizationsyouseewithyourmindseye.Ifyoutryshiftingyourattentionfromyourrealeyestoyourmind'seyes,youwillnoticethedifference.WhatyouseewithyourrealeyesinthebeginningisstillnotrealHI;it'scalledphosphenes,andit'scausedbyyourbrainsactivityinvisualpart.WatchingphosphenesgetsyoureallyfasttorealHIandHH.AlthoughtherewasalotdebatingaboutwhatisHIorwhatisn't,Istillhaven'tfoundtherealandbackedupexplanationforit,butthisseemstrueenough.
Sounds
HypnagogicSoundssettleinwhenyouareveryclosetosleep.Theymaybeunfamiliarsounds,wellknownsounds,orvoicesofrelatives.Theexperiencecanbeastonishinglyreal.Mostpeoplefreakoutatthispointandwakethemselvesup.Youmuststaycalmtroughthisphase,evenifyouhearbombsfalling,becausethesoundsarenotreal.
Hallucinations
Last,butnottheleast,thehypnagogichallucinations.Thoseareverysimilartoimagerybutthedifferenceisthattheyareoftenawhole,vivid,scenethatincludessounds,sometimesevenfeelings,andunlikeimagerytheytendtoexistforfewsecondsevenwhenyouopenyoureyes.TheyareyourbestfriendwhenitcomestoWILD.Why?Becauseaftersometimewatchingthemtheybecomeadreamyoucanstepinto.
SleepParalysis
Yourbodyenterssleepparalysissoyoudon'tdoinRLwhatyoudoinadream.SPsettlesinafterthehypnagogia,whenyouareasleep.IftherewasnoSP,andyouhadadreamthatyouwereinyourroom,andyougotoutofbedandjumpedthroughawindowtofly,youwoulddotwothings:
Youwouldfly(inadream).
YouwouldNOTfly,andpossiblydie,becauseyouhadnoSPinRL.
Theother,morelikely,possibilityisyouwouldsimplywakeupbecauseyourbodyismoving.Asaresult,youwouldsleeppoorlybecauseeverydreamyouhavewouldwakeyouup.
So,SPisnotunnaturalorsomethingtofear,thinkofitasabighelp,andithappenseverynightregardlessofyoubeingawareofitornot.Whenithappensjustgowiththeflow.
Vibrations/Wind
Some,butnotall,peoplewhopracticeWILDexperiencevibrationsgoingthroughtheirbody.Thevibrationsshouldnotbemistakenforthatlittlenumbnessfeeling,astheyarequitedifferentandyoucan'tmissthem.Theyhaveaveryelectricqualitytothem,somethinglikebeingshockedbyelectricity,buttheyshouldnotbepainful.Somepeopleexperienceacoldwindblowingthroughtheirbodyinsteadofvibrations.Peoplewhoreportedwind,experiencedanOBEratherthanLD.Vibrations/Windisagoodsignyouaregettingthere.When/ifyouexperiencethem,waituntiltheybecomeerthentrytorolloverandyoushouldbeinadream.Ifyouwaittoolongyoucouldjustremainawakeinthatstate.Notewhenrollingoveryoucoulddoitintwoways,imaginingit,ortryingphysicallytomove,usethewaythatworksforyou.
Herearesomeotherwaystomovetowardsadream.
Imagineyourselfsinkingheadfirst.
IfyouexperienceHHusethattoenterdream.
Imaginegoingtroughawallifyouarelyingagainstone.
Floattotheceiling.
Imaginespinningyourbody(likerollingover)asfastasyoucanandletmomentumofthatmovementhelpyourolloverintodream.
Useimagination,whatevergivesyoufeelingofmovingyourbodyorHHcanwork.
Distractions
ThedistractionsaretheworstenemyofanypersonpracticingWILD,butnotaonethough.
TheItch
Possiblythemostcommondistractionforanybeginner.

Whenyouexperienceit,trytomoveitjustalittle,upordown.Youwillsucceed.
Fromthere,moveitsomemore,whenyoumoveditalittle,youcanmoveitsomemore,right?Well,ifyoucanmoveit,itdoesn'treallyexist,andassoonasyourealizeit'snotrealitwillgoaway,ifnot,justwantitdisappearanditwill.
b)Shiftingyourattention
Thekeytothistechniqueis,well,youguessedit,shiftingyourattentiontosomethingelse.UseHI,anyfeeling,thoughts,anythingthatisfarawayfromyourrealbody.Yourdreambodycan'titch,unlessyouwantitto.
Saliva
This,too,isacommonproblemasswallowingwillruinyourattemptatWILD.
It'srecommendedtoswallowatbeginning,andasyouprogresstowardssleepyouwon'tsalivateasmuch.Likeanyotherdistraction,it'sonlyaproblemifyoufocusonit.Again,youmustshiftyourattentionelsewhere.Ithelpsifyougentlypressthetipofyourtongueagainsttheinnerportionofyourlowerteeth.Ifyouwonderhowcanithelp,tryliftingyourtonguesoyoutouchupperportionofyourmouthasdeepasyoucan;itmakesyouproducemoresalivathannormal.Well,loweringyourtonguedoestheopposite.
Externaldistractions
Thiskindofdistractionscan'tbehelped,orcanthey?
Ifthereisnottoomuchdistractionfromtheoutsideworldyoucandosomethingaboutit.AsyoupracticeWILDyouwill,soonerorlater,learnhowtofallasleepfasterandslower,youwillbemoreawareoftheprocess.So,usethattoyouradvantage,startfallingasleepfast,thenwhenyouaredeepenoughsoyouhearmorebuzzinginyourearsthanoutsideworld,justcontinueasyouwouldiftherewherenodistractions.
